Monthly Archives: April 2011
On 23rd of April, at 8am, Hyun Bin left the Incheon Sea Defense training center with the other 90 trainees for his very first holiday.
He gave a short answer to the news reporter when asked about his vacation, then got on a car by his agency and returned home. Hyun Bin expects to spend some quality time with his family during this break. After this he will be joining the front line at Baek Ryoung-do 6 brigades on the 29th.
After having finished boot camp last week, Hyun Bin has the full 7 days this week to:
(1) Attend a private graduation ceremony for bootcamp completion. It was much debated whether this would have been publicly available to the media like his entrance to the Marines. The authorities have decided to make it private.
(2) Begin acclimating to Byeongnyeong – the island where he would be stationed for duties and further training (including amphibious training).
(3) From Byeongnyeong, ride a bus back to Incheon with his comrades and,
(4) then be temporarily discharged to enjoy some personal time for 4 days, 5 nights.
His management issued a statement that due to the intensity of the training, he likely will spend time at home to rest.
Enjoy your well-deserved break, Tae Pyung!

Q15. The reason I like the word ‘cool’?
Doesn’t the word ‘cool’ contain the meaning of beautiful? Hahahaha … (Editor’s note: The Korean word used in this case for ‘cool is ‘mutjida’ or ‘motji’ as was frequently told to Gil Ra Im – which is kind of like “you’re attractive, you’re hot” so it also means ‘beautiful’ )
I’d like to look more proactive and powerful woman rather than cause protective instincts since I was little. (Editor’s note: She means she would rather look independent than have some other people always try to protect her ever since she was little)
Q16. The role you want to play 20 years later?
I want to play in the melo (drama or movie) like a lovely woman wearing overalls like Meryl Streep (even after 20 years). I wish there is any director who wants to cast me at that time. Hahaha… (Editor’s note: She wants to play a role similar to Mamma Mia)

This is probably not the first we hear of this if you have always been a Ha Ji Won fan. If not, the time has come that Ha Ji Won’s primary and secondary school report card and yearbook photos are creating buzz in Korean media! Ha Ji Won’s early life had been exposed via the 18th broadcast of the SBS “Good Morning” show. Looks like we are going to be seeing a continuation of the show that stated with the Olay interview last week (Please stay tuned!)
And with these photos, netizens and media persons in South Korea alike are branding uri Ha Ji Won as a true ‘eomchinttal’ . Eom-chin-ttal is the Korean abbreviation/slang for “Mother’s friend’s daughter” – typically given to someone who is so amazing that your own mother keeps comparing you with that person.
Why is Ha Ji Won an “Eomchinttal”? Because her early progress report cards show someone who had been multiple times elected as either class vice president or president, got straight aces in school marks, and received high praises from faculty. Her high school teacher even went on to say that even if her acting career was already starting out, she still sincerely wanted to go to school and didn’t want to miss a single day of school.
Her yearbook photo shows a transcendent beauty — someone who had looked as beautiful as she is now even before.
Now, tell me, how can someone not fall in love with such an amazing woman? Eomchinttal indeed!
Ha Ji Won’s latest outings in white – for an April 6 premiere, then again in a white dress in an Olay Event is drawing some media attention (and a white suit shopping for jewelry at Cartier). The clean, white look is giving her a purely and simply feminine look (as with her long locks for an interview which we discussed early on). This is in contrast to the action-filled, boyish charisma she projected for Secret Garden and also the CFs that shortly came after it.
It appears that Ha Ji Won may be moving on from her Gil Ra Im character by donning these chic outfits that give off the feminine charm.
But that she’s opting for white makes this author feel as if there’s a hidden message behind it… hmm, what could it be Ji Won-ssi?

Hyun Bin completes Week 4 of intense military training. Together with his comrades, he is seen rappeling 21 meters down a wall with only a calm buddy below him guiding him down. He is looking good and has transformed into a real Marine!
Looking good Binnie!
Just wanted to clear up the discussion we had on this topic. Now I think, Hyun Bin is getting ‘special treatment’ as in accordance with his wishes he will finally serve regular Marine duties. Apparently he was recruited for PR, but in light of the very public debacle on his assignment, the Ministry of National Defense changed their mind. He will be PR on an as needed-basis, will be stuck in an island near the North Korean border for 5-6 months doing ‘combat duties’ until he returns to base for regular duties. Which makes me think — when is PR not needed? It’s not a combat time for the Marines, so there really is no ‘combat duty’, yet. Sly move, Marines. Sly…
Here is the article…
.Although Hyun Bin withdrew from the public eye to begin his military service with the marines, the spotlight on the actor remains strong. On April 14th, the Ministry of National Defense held a press conference that addressed questions regarding his service as a public relations officer.
Minister Kim Kwan Jin stated, “Hyun Bin was recruited as a public relations officer, but wouldn’t it be better that he serve as a general soldier at the battlefront? Of course, there must be a reason for the Commandment of the Marine Corps making such a decision.”
Kim Min Suk replied, “Hyun Bin will be serving as a general soldier, and will serve as a public relations/promotional officer when needed.”

Ha Ji Won was interviewed by Arirang at her shoot for the Olay Cosmetics CF.
In this interview, she was asked about her ‘ideal’ person and she answered in earnest —
“I like people who are funny, positive, and laugh a lot. Someone who I can receive positive energy from when we’re together. Appearance? A good looking person. *laughs* But the mind is most important.”
At the end of the clip, see her wish Hyun Bin well in the military, “to enjoy the military as if like in a movie and to come back more mature and more handsome before”.
Notice the order of the progression of the interview, her ‘ideal’ types was asked first then the goodwill wish to Hyun Bin, as if he was that ideal type. Nice framing Reporter-nim.

This had been one of the many ads Hyun Bin shot before his stint at the military. Now, we see why that man had been super busy days after SeGa and days before his enlistment. That 4D5N break in the coming two weeks will definitely be a refreshing one for him, since it is supposed to be a personal holiday.
It does look like we will be seeing A LOT of Hyun Bin in the next 21 months, as it is looking like he had filmed two years’ worth of endorsements before enlisting. And effectively this means that, although they don’t star in a CF together, our Secret Garden couple will be battling for airtime in CF’s in the months to come.
In his official endorsement of Samsung Smart TVs, he reprises his role as CEO Kim Joo Won, together with our other favorite Kim – Secretary Kim (Kim Sung Oh). Samsung released a special DVD for this, with all 4 CFs and a special BTS.

By now, most of us would have probably heard about Hyun Bin doing really well at military boot camp. If you are clueless what we are talking about, fear not — Alou has a chockfull of these news in her DramaScenes blog. Just read these articles — Hyun Bin Rifle Training or Hyun Bin – Assignment and First Break and then come back to spazz with us here at HBHJW Fanpage.
Are you back yet? Okay, so let’s continue our discussion.
Chosun Ilbo reporter Kim Tae Ik dared to raise the question. Is it worth it that Hyun Bin is looking as if he’s receiving star treatment in the Marines? Read the complete post here – Is It Smart To Give Hyun Bin Special Treatment?
Hyun Bin didn’t ask for it, we know this for sure. Our dear namja had always wanted to take on the challenge and rigor of the Marine life. And now by being assigned as PR representative to the Marines, it seems like he may have less action time after all. But since it wasn’t his own preference, I would rather not qualify it as ‘special treatment.’
Personally, I feel as though he is actually more fit for the PR role, given his background. But we also have a very able rookie who can as well be a leader within his platoon down the road, being limited to ‘recruiting’ tasks. Although it does look like we will have him out of harm’s way like we all wish, the assignment may have dashed the hopes of our unwavering elite leader, to really get rough and dirty during his service time. I hope his first break out of his service, scheduled in the next two weeks, will give him some time to ponder and hopefull re-adjust his expectations so he will still do the best in his assigned task.
She is back… to her old long locks.
For a Spring Fashion shoot, Ha Ji Won is back to her long feminine hair, marking her official ‘shedding’ of Ra-Im’s image.
MBC Section TV was able to catch her in an interview, where she excitedly called “Hyun Bin-ssi!!” and was honestly looking as if she was anticipating a visit from the guy who is currently in the military. She broke into laughter seeing it was just another Kim Joo Won copycat coming out. (But honestly, I don’t know why she said “Hyun Bin-ssi”, if they were going to bring in a Kim Joo Won clone).
During the interview she was asked how she feels with the long line of men all claiming her to be their ideal. She talks about 2PM’s Ok Taecyeon, who had long harbored a not-so-secret admiration for this amazing yeoja. She expressed wishing that someday they get to star in a movie together where they each would kill each other off (ala Mr and Mrs Smith).
Oh Ha Ji Won-ssi, don’t you know how we ‘shippers’ wish you would star in such a movie with top Marine shooter Kim Tae Pyung instead! Now that would be heaven, yea?
She also talks about her training for her upcoming sport movie, “Koreans”, where she is currently hard at work practicing pingpong. She is already receiving attention for her toned physique, with the trainer calling her out as being the only one with such muscle mass out of all actresses.

For it’s third volume issue in 2011, Hyun Bin graces the cover of 10Asia+ Secret, an entertainment ‘mook’ magazine in South Korea. This volume was released last March 23.
In this month’s magazine, Hyun Bin is the cover story.
He had some drool-worthy shots from his days prior to his military service (and likely shot from Berlinale). His cover story includes our favorite namja’s history (from 2008-2011).
But for now, here are scans of uri Ddol Chu!
Additionally, Secret Garden was featured, including interviews with Ha Ji Won, Yoon Sang Hyun, and Hyun Bin himself. It also has information about the drama, and what looks to be a shipper page feature.
